About this piece

Thirteen inches, wound as tight as rope.

The Kissi and their neighbors used iron rods of this type as currency for generations, in daily commerce and in bridewealth payments. This one, hand-forged in Sierra Leone in the 20th century, has a tightly wound spiral shaft that catches the light along its whole length. One end opens into a small fan-shaped crossbar; the other gathers into a rough, lumpy knob.

The iron carries a mottled brown-gray patina.

It lies beautifully flat. Put it on a shelf and leave it there.
