About this piece
Sierra Leone. A bride is settled. The iron changes hands.
This Kissi rod was forged in the 20th century and runs about eighteen inches. Rods of this type were a recognized currency, given in marriage payments and used to store wealth. One end finishes in a flat, fan-shaped crossbar with a tiny hooked edge. From there the shaft runs straight and fairly stout, then narrows into a delicate spiral twist that tapers to a fine point. Rusty brown, hammered along its length.
Set beside others. You will notice how much the form allowed.
