About this piece
Much about the Koma and their makers remains unknown. The figures themselves have been found in great numbers at ancient mound sites in northern Ghana, generally associated with burial and commemoration.
This double janiform terra cotta dates to between the 13th and 17th centuries. Thirteen inches tall, it has a tall conical head with a small face of slit eyes and mouth, flanked by small ear knobs. Incised, notched bands like necklaces cross the broad shoulders. The hands rest on the thighs, fingers drawn in fine lines, and an object is held at the side. The pale, sandy clay is worn smooth in places.
Questions remain. The figure keeps them in good order.
