About this piece

Mid-call. That is the expression. Someone has just said something and the face is still holding the word.

This terra cotta head was made by the Koma people of northern Ghana between the 13th and 17th centuries. Figures like it come from mounds in the region and are thought to have played a role in funerary custom. Deep heavy-lidded eyes beneath a curving brow, a broad triangular nose, a wide mouth thrust forward. A small knob sits at the center of the forehead, and a broken neck stump remains below. The pale buff clay is worn smooth in places.

Five and a half inches, on a ring mount. You will want to answer.
