About this piece

The eyes are ringed in raised clay. They have the look of having seen it all, and they have.

This Koma head comes from northern Ghana and dates between the 13th and 17th centuries. Koma terra cotta figures are known from burial mounds in the region. Much about them remains uncertain, but they are thought to relate to funerary practice and the memory of ancestors. The face is boldly expressive: large round eyes, a long ridged nose running up to the brow, full stacked lips that project outward. Beaded edging lines the top of the head.

A short cylindrical neck continues beneath the chin. The reddish-brown surface is pitted and encrusted with earth. Under four inches tall. Character does not depend on size.
