About this piece

Two large round eyes, built up coil by coil. They have been staring straight ahead for a very long time.

A Koma terra cotta from northern Ghana, 13th to 17th century, elongated and tapering. A band of hatching runs across the brow. The lower face is wrapped by horizontal ridges around mouth and chin. The clay is a soft reddish orange with darker earth lodged in its crevices and a gently eroded surface. Such figures are generally associated with funerary observance. A rod mount lifts it to seven and a half inches.

It meets you at eye level. Be ready.
