About this piece
Two bulging eyes. A long ridge of nose. Below that, stacked ridges that might be a mouth and a chin.
This terra cotta figure was made by the Koma people of Ghana between the 13th and 17th centuries, long and flattened in form. Many Koma figures were found in burial mounds in northern Ghana and are generally thought to relate to rites for the dead. The head has small lugs at the upper corners.
The warm orange clay is worn and pitted. Six and a half inches tall.
Keep it company with other early work in clay.
