About this piece
Dark residue has settled into the eyes and mouth, and the face is sharper for it.
The Koma people of Ghana made this terra cotta funerary figure between the 13th and 17th centuries. Koma figures came to light in mound sites in northern Ghana and are generally associated with funerary practice. It is a head, flat across the top, with large ringed eyes, a long nose with pierced nostrils, and a small mouth above a projecting chin.
The surface is weathered, with a small loss at the lower edge. Seven inches tall.
Grime, in this case, is a kind of draftsmanship.
