About this piece

Two riders, one horse. Nobody got down.

The Kotoko of the Lake Chad region worked brass and bronze by the lost-wax method, producing small horsemen and other figures often carried or worn as personal charms. This one was cast by Kotoko artists in Chad in the 20th century. It is only two inches long. The horse has a long, arching neck, a round eye and a curled tail. Both riders wear pointed caps. The one in front reaches toward the horse’s neck while the other holds close behind. Polished golden highlights stand out against darker patina in the recesses.

Small enough to pocket. Big enough for company.
