About this piece

South of Lake Chad, the rivers run, and along them live the Kotoko, whose riders held an important place in the region’s history.

This tiny bronze horseman was made in the 20th century by the lost-wax method for which the Kotoko are known. Two inches tall. The rider sits upright, one arm raised, a short staff or spear held across his body, a tall ringed conical headdress on his head. His mount is compact and sturdy, with a small head, a banded harness across the chest, short tapering legs.

Golden bronze shines on the raised surfaces. Darker patina gathers in the recesses.

Carry him in a coat pocket. He is used to the road.
