About this piece

There is a hole through the flank, edged in green. That is where the cord went.

The Kotoko of Chad cast many small figures and amulets, typically by the lost-wax method. This bronze horse and rider, made in the 20th century, is pierced through the body so it could be suspended and worn. The horse stands on four long legs that splay outward, neck stretched forward to a small head with pricked ears. The rider is a slim upright form, a thin twisted rein looping from his hands to the horse’s head.

The warm golden-brown surface has been softened by handling. Two and three-quarter inches. Quite a lot of horse to hang at the throat.
