Luba Standing Figure - Male

Calm faces are a Luba specialty. Inward, unhurried, finely finished.

This standing man, carved in the 20th century in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is about eleven and a quarter inches tall. Figures like him were often made to honor ancestors or serve ritual purposes. His knees are slightly bent, his hands rest at the sides of his belly.

The domed head has a smooth brow, almond eyes, small ears and closed lips, and a fine cord is carved around the neck. The wood has a deep, dark, glossy patina. He stands on an integral round base set on a black block.

He has nothing to add. He has thought about it.
