About this piece

Her arms reach her ankles. Never mind. She is laughing.

This iron figure from Mali, made in the 20th century, sits cross-legged. Small metal figures were made in Mali for use in the household and in ceremony. The torso is a flat, elongated panel with small breasts and a round pendant at the neck, while a spiral motif marks the lower body. The face has a prominent nose, a broad smiling mouth and a small crest above.

Brassy highlights glint on the nose and lips against the dark, earthy brown. Six inches tall. Lively company for a bookshelf.
