About this piece

Seventeen inches of Cameroonian clay, and it appears to have something to say. The Mambila are known for giving pots animated, character-filled forms.

Here the neck turns into an animal head with pointed ears, its open muzzle serving as the spout. Rows of raised dots run down the neck to a pale collar band. Below, a chest panel in orange pigment is stamped with small rings. Herringbone-incised ridges frame the chest like arms, and the dark, rounded body is painted with soft circles of white and orange. This terra cotta vessel was shaped in the 20th century and rests on a black ring stand.

It was made to hold things. It looks as though it also holds opinions.
