About this piece

Indigo, and patience. Mossi cloth was traditionally woven in narrow cotton strips and sewn together, and dyeing with indigo was a highly developed craft in the region.

This woman’s wrap was woven and dyed in Burkina Faso in the 20th century. The deep blue ground carries resist-dyed marks in white: rows of dots and dashes, broad bands of stacked lines, arch-like forms across the middle register. At one side, a section keeps its own softer pattern. The strip construction shows across the width, and the indigo shifts from inky to slightly faded blue. About three and a half by five feet.

Hang it and the room acquires a horizon. A blue one.
