About this piece
Narrow strips of cotton, woven long, then sewn side to side. That is how a good deal of West African cloth begins.
This wrapper was woven by the Mossi of Burkina Faso in the 20th century. Wrappers were an essential part of a woman’s dress, for everyday wear and special occasions. It is made in two broad panels, with a creamy white ground crossed by bands of soft periwinkle blue, each edged with fine dark lines. The ends finish in short, hand-knotted fringes.
Light spotting and a gentle softening show age and use. About 41 by 60 inches.
Crisp, graphic, and quietly cool.
