Nupe Wood House Post, Based

Seven and a half feet of Nupe carving, and not a plain inch of it.

The Nupe of central Nigeria are known for carved posts that supported the roofs of houses and reception rooms, often decorated along their length. This house post dates to the 20th century.

It is a long, slender shaft with a slight natural curve, carved from top to bottom with a repeating pattern of notches and faceted chevrons. The wood is dark and weathered. It stands on a square black base.

Mind the ceiling.
