Ogoni Elu Face Mask with Hyena on Top, Based

Satire, in Ogoni country, wears a mask with a hinged jaw.

This Elu face mask was carved in wood with pigment in the 20th century. The separately carved lower jaw gives the round, smiling face its articulated mouth, and moved in masquerades both theatrical and satirical. Narrow slit eyes sit beneath arched brows, the ears stand out, the nose is short and rounded. On the crown stands a small four-legged hyena with pricked ears. The wood is brown, with traces of pigment. Eighteen and a quarter inches, on a wooden base.

Somebody gets teased. The hyena is not telling who.
