About this piece
Legs splayed, arms out, balanced on a tripod of its own making.
Attributed to the Senufo of the Ivory Coast, this small iron figure was made in the 20th century. Senufo metalworkers made many small figures and charms, often worn on the body or kept as personal protective objects. The figure sits with legs extended and splayed wide, which forms a stable tripod, while the arms angle outward from the shoulders with flattened ends. The round head has a crested top and small compact features, and a faint incised mark crosses the torso. Smooth, dark greenish-black patina, lighter where rubbed.
Just over four inches. Sits where it’s put.
