Tuareg Cylindrical Treasury Box with Key
About this piece
A key, a hasp, and something worth locking up.
Tuareg smiths of Mali made this cylindrical treasury box, key included, in the 20th century. They are known for their metalwork, and boxes like this kept jewelry, money and other valuables secure. The brass body is paneled, alternating domed silver bosses with engraved silver strips, edged with copper rivets and fine incised patterns. A copper hasp closes the lid for locking. The lid is studded with small domes along radiating lines and topped with a tall silver-and-brass finial under an engraved cap.
Six and a half inches across. You will find yourself turning it over in your hands. Nobody minds.
