Kurdish Patchwork Kilim / Tapestry

Four colors, five columns, and not a curve anywhere.

Turkey, twentieth century, wool, about five feet wide and eight and a half feet long. Patchwork in long vertical bands: midnight blue, a hot red, cream with faint stripes, deep aubergine, and blue again. Small patches and worn places break up each strip.

The look is austere and very modern. The wool is anything but new. It has the quiet confidence of a thing woven in the twentieth century and in no hurry about it.

Hang it on the long wall. The sofa will understand.
