About this piece

Elders in Tanzania did not simply walk with a stick. They carried a statement.

The Zaramo are well known for staffs crowned with small human figures, carried by elders and people of standing. This one was carved in the 20th century and stands just over three feet tall on its base. A slender figure, arms held close to the body, forms the finial. Beneath it, a block of finely incised geometric pattern gives way to bands of rings and a long, tapering shaft.

The wood is rich reddish-brown, burnished lighter on the raised areas. A narrow metal collar circles the lower shaft. Put it by the door. Visitors will feel slightly underdressed.
