About this piece

Six feet of Cameroon, upright. The roof once leaned on posts like this one.

Carved house posts supported the roofs of important houses and meeting places, often bearing figures linked to the prosperity of the household. This one, from the 20th century, rises from a tapering trunk to a broad, forked top. Just below the fork, two full breasts are carved in high relief, and under them a small standing female figure with a geometric face, arms at her sides, squared feet. The wood has weathered to soft gray-brown with traces of reddish color, deeply checked by long exposure.

It needs a tall room. Preferably one with something to say.
