Senufo Iron Kneeling Figure

Among the Senufo of Ivory Coast, a diviner’s advice might send a person home wearing a small metal figure. Protection, carried on the body.

This one is iron, made in the 20th century, three and a half inches tall. It kneels with the legs folded in two sinuous curves, one foot extended behind. The arms fall long and straight from square shoulders, bound with thick bands at the upper arm, and loop down to meet the knees. A small crested head sits on a narrow neck above small breasts. The dark surface keeps scattered traces of green.
