About this piece

The rider holds his shield in front of him, coiled like a snail. He keeps his eyes on the road.

Kotoko casters of the Lake Chad region used the lost-wax method to make small horsemen and other figures, often worn or kept as personal objects. This bronze, from Chad, was cast in the 20th century. The headdress is tall, ringed and conical. A twisted rein runs to the horse’s curved, beak-like head, and ribbed bands circle the animal’s chest and body.

Four short tapering legs. A small tail. A dark patina, worn to bright brass on the high points. Two and a half inches, and not one wasted line.
