About this piece

Buganda potters liked a dark, burnished finish, and they had a way with feet.

This vessel, made by the Baganda peoples of Uganda in the 20th century, stands eleven inches high and eleven across. A tall cylindrical neck with a rolled rim is circled by a band of fine textured decoration, and a raised collar marks the transition to the body.

Below, the vessel swells into a cluster of large, rounded, bulbous feet with openings between them. The smoky gray-brown surface is even and matte.

Many feet. One firm stance.
