About this piece

The Bambara hunter went into the bush with a coat full of promises.

Hunters belonged to respected associations, and their tunics were loaded with amulets believed to protect the wearer and bring success. This one, made in Mali in the 20th century, is raffia, leather and horn: a short-sleeved tunic of tan woven fiber, covered with dozens of small, square leather-wrapped packets in red and dark brown.

Each trails long leather thongs that hang well below the hem in a heavy fringe. Forty-eight inches across the sleeves, with soiling, fading and wear consistent with use.

Hang it flat. It will make its own argument.
