About this piece

Soft peak, bristling body. This hat has two moods and wears both.

Made by the Bamileke of Cameroon in the 20th century, crocheted in hemp, just over thirteen inches tall on its stand. Crocheted hats like it were worn as marks of rank and identity. A domed crown is banded in black and natural fiber. Below, looped and knotted tufts in black and tan bristle from the body above a dark-edged rim.

Headgear with texture, and the manners to match.
