About this piece

A man of rank does not need to draw a sword. He needs only to carry one.

In the kingdoms of the Cameroon Grassfields, swords like this were prestige objects, carried by titled men as emblems of rank, not used in combat. This one is Bamileke, cast in bronze in the 19th century, about twenty-five inches tall. The broad blade curves gently and widens toward a rounded, hooked tip. Dense, swirling feathered patterns are engraved across it. The hilt is a standing figure, arms held against the body, hair in a ridged coiffure. The patina is deep brown, dark and even.

It makes the point without raising its voice.
