Baule Blolo or Spirit Spouse Figure

Everyone, the Baule hold, has a spouse in the other world. Most days it goes unremarked. Some days it does not.

When the partner made trouble, a figure could be carved to give it a home, and to receive attention and offerings. This blolo is Ivory Coast, 20th century, thirteen inches of wood. She stands upright on a shallow base, hands at her hips making open loops beside the torso. Her hair is gathered into ridged lobes above a serene face, narrow eyes, a small smile. The finish is smooth, glossy black.

A good marriage takes two worlds’ patience.
