About this piece

Knees up, arms resting on them, back straight. Sit like this and see how it feels.

Metalworkers in the Lake Chad region have long used the lost-wax technique to make small figures and ornaments, valued as personal possessions and protective objects. This seated woman, cast in brass in Chad in the 20th century, stands a little over six inches tall. Full breasts, a rounded navel, bands at the upper arms. The face is simply modeled, with a long nose and incised marks at the cheeks.

A mottled surface of green verdigris and reddish-brown earth gives her a well-aged, almost stony look.

She has been sitting a long time. She is not bored.
