About this piece

A sword that was never meant to be swung. It was meant to be spent.

Across much of Central Africa, iron worked into the shapes of blades and tools served as money, changing hands in bridewealth and other important payments. This one is from the Republic of Congo, forged in the 20th century. A slender, gently tapering blade with a faint central ridge rises to a sharp point. At the base it flares into a broad, squared foot set with a short tang. The surface is dark, weathered gray-brown, pitted from forging and age.

Fifty-six inches. Hang it against a bare wall and leave the rest empty.
