About this piece
A cloth deserves a rod. A rod deserves a finial.
This textile hanger was carved from wood in the Republic of Congo in the 20th century, and rods like it were used to suspend and display cloth. Makers often took particular care with the end. The shaft here tapers over forty-one inches to a sharp point, while the other end has a ringed collar and a triangular openwork finial. The dark, close-grained wood has a soft sheen from handling, and faint grain runs along its length.
Hung on a wall or laid on a shelf, it reads like a drawing made with one stroke.
