Congolese Forged Iron Sword Currency

Fifty-nine inches of iron, and not a coin in sight.

Currency in Central Africa took many shapes, from blades to bars, and it stored wealth and changed hands in marriage payments and other significant exchanges. This sword currency is from the Republic of Congo, 20th century. The slim blade comes to a sharp point, divided by a fine central ridge. Below, it widens into a broad flared base with pointed wings and a short tang. Dark brown shot through with gray, with the subtle pitting of age.
