Congolese Wood Textile Hanger, Mounted

Just over forty-three inches, and all of the carver’s attention at one end.

Carved in the Republic of Congo in the 20th century, this rod once held lengths of cloth for storage or display. The trapezoidal finial is pierced at its center and edged with fine notched carving, above a series of tight ringed collars. Below, the slim shaft runs straight and true before narrowing to a fine point. The wood is a warm, even mid-brown with a light patina. A mount lets it lie horizontally.
