About this piece
A length of cloth, hung where it can be seen. In Central Africa that was no small gesture. Cloth was dress, ceremony and exchange all at once, and it wanted a proper place to rest.
This is the rod for it. Thirty-nine inches of Congolese wood, carved from a single length in the 20th century. The shaft swells at the center and tapers to a point. At the far end sits a small, open triangular head. The wood has gone deep brown, smooth and worn, the fine grain running its whole length.
Hang a scarf from it. Or nothing at all. It manages either way.
