Dogon Bronze Equestrian Figure

Early 20th century, Mali. A rider with a staff in one hand and the reins in the other, and no particular hurry.

The horse and rider is a classic Dogon subject, long tied to prestige and leadership. This one is bronze, six inches tall. The horse’s arched legs meet a flat, oval base. Its long tail curves down to the base, its head is bowed and marked with a bridle. The rider sits upright, with ridges at the neck and arm bands at the wrists. A dark patina unifies the whole.

Leadership, at a walk.
