About this piece

To own a horse, in Dogon country, was to be somebody. The horseman became a favored subject for exactly that reason, linked to prestige and to figures of authority.

This cast bronze rider dates to the early 20th century and stands four inches tall. He sits tall and upright on a small, sturdy mount, holding the reins before him with banded wrists. The face is lively, the chin jutting, a crested coiffure sweeping back. The horse lowers its long muzzle, legs set at a stride, tail flicking down. The brown patina is dark and slightly crusty, lighter where it has worn.

Small. Unhurried. Quite sure of the route.
