About this piece

Head tipped back, he looks up. Whatever he is asking, it is a short question.

Dogon smiths cast small brass and bronze figures by the lost-wax method, and such pieces were kept as personal or protective objects. This one, attributed to the Dogon of Mali, 20th century, is three inches tall. He kneels with a long upright torso and a head tipped back, with a long nose, small ears and a crest along the top of the head. Ridged bands mark the upper arms and wrists, and the hands rest near the knees. The surface is a pale sandy bronze, with traces of green.

Mounted on a black base. Reverent, and rather small about it.
