About this piece

Lost wax, miniature scale, and a very upright posture.

Dogon cast figures in miniature, often by the lost-wax process, and they show the same elongated, upright forms as larger Dogon sculpture. This one was made in Mali in the 20th century. It stands frontally with straight legs and long arms held close to the body, hands at the thighs, bands of rings around the forearms. The head is crested and leans slightly forward above a short beard, and small raised studs decorate the chest.

The surface is dark, mottled green and gray, with a rough cast texture. Five inches tall.

Compact, and not about to be moved.
