About this piece

Equipped. A curved implement over one shoulder, straps across the chest, a belt at the waist.

Dogon smiths cast small figures by the lost-wax method for use on shrines, and many show people equipped for particular roles and tasks. This bronze man from Mali, 20th century, is five and a half inches tall. He wears a tall conical headdress, with ribbed bands at the upper arms and lower legs. One long arm holds an object at his side.

The bronze is dark and earthy, with lighter mineral deposits that give the surface depth.

He is on his way. Do not ask where.
