About this piece

She kneels with a bowl held to her belly, and her feet splayed out behind.

Figures in attitudes of offering appear often in Dogon art, where the vessel can suggest nourishment and ritual gifts. This one, forged in iron by Dogon artisans in Mali in the 20th century, is a kneeling woman, seven and a half inches tall. She cradles a round bowl against her abdomen with both hands. Her elongated neck is ringed with a collar, and her narrow face is crowned by a tall, crested coiffure. Small breasts and a faint pattern of incised marks define the torso.

The dark metal shows warm highlights on its raised surfaces.

She is offering. The rest is up to you.
