About this piece

She lifts the vessel with both hands. Nobody is rushing her.

Among the Dogon, specialist smiths cast small figures showing familiar acts of daily and ritual life: carrying and pounding grain, drinking, offering. This bronze, from Mali, was cast in the 20th century. Just over five inches tall, she has a crested head, a strap across the torso, a pronounced navel above a short apron incised with crosshatching. Her slim legs end in flat feet. The brown patina is smooth and even, brighter on the raised surfaces, and the elongated proportions give her an upright line.

One long drink. Take a lesson from it.
