About this piece

Two and a half inches, and a rider already underway.

The Dogon smiths of Mali cast miniature riders, animals and people, many to be worn as personal ornaments or charms. This bronze pendant dates to the 20th century. The seated rider has a tall pointed head ending in a suspension loop, prominent ears, and arms reaching forward over the horse’s neck.

The horse stands on four straight legs, its tail curving up behind. Golden highlights, dark patina, patches of green and white deposit: all testimony to age and wear.

Wear it, or merely admire its momentum.
