Dogon Standing Female Figure

One hand to the side of her head, the other holding a round form to her belly.

Female figures in Dogon art are frequently associated with fertility and the well-being of the family line. This one is bronze, cast in Mali in the 20th century, barely four inches high. Her breasts are small and high. The head is long and narrow, with a pointed crown and a prominent chin, and a short wrap is suggested at the hips. Straight legs end in flat, squared feet. The surface is heavily mottled in dark green and gray, rough and crusted.

Quiet. Intimate. Do not mistake that for slight.
