About this piece

She carries the bowl on her head, and does not look down. Years of practice, presumably.

Dogon smiths in Mali cast miniature figures in metal for personal use, protection and display, often showing scenes from daily life. This bronze woman was made in the 20th century and stands only four inches tall. Her hair is gathered in a banded bun beneath a flat-topped bowl. A heavy ringed collar spreads across her shoulders. The face is carefully modeled, the arms fall close to her sides, and even the toes are indicated. The patina is dark and glossy, with warm highlights.

Balance, in four inches. Take notes.
