About this piece

Indigo and white: everyday dress for Dogon women, and no apology needed.

This wrap was woven in cotton in Mali in the 20th century, strip-woven on narrow looms and dyed with indigo in the traditional manner. Horizontal stripes of deep indigo and cream run across it, broad and widely spaced above, much finer and closer below, with light blue lines inside the wider bands.

One edge is fringed, and reddish-brown fabric shows along the other. There is gentle fading and a few small holes from wear. It measures forty-four by fifty-eight inches.

Worn is a respectable condition.
