Fulani Twisting Leaf Earrings

Made in a contemporary workshop in Mali, in a design much loved.

Among the Fulani, large twisted gold earrings have long been prized by women as a sign of beauty and prosperity, and the form remains closely identified with the region. Here brass is finished in gold and beaten into thin ruffled leaves that spiral around one another, forming a full, almost floral body. A fine wire loop arches above for the ear.

Each measures roughly an inch and a half. The light hammered texture is on the bright metal for anyone to see. Handmade, and not in the least apologetic.
