About this piece

Nearly eleven feet of wood, and the roof it once understood.

The Gurage are known for large round houses with tall conical thatched roofs, raised and supported with wooden posts and beams cut from local timber. This house post, 20th century, tapers gently to a pointed top and carries fine vertical tool marks along its narrow faces. The wood has weathered to a deep, nearly black brown with a dry, quiet surface, and it is set on a square metal base.

Spare and linear, it reads almost as modern sculpture.

Best with a high ceiling and a bare corner.
