About this piece

Horns of an antelope. Snout of something far less polite.

That is Zamble, one of the best-known masked characters of the Guro of the Ivory Coast, and this mask was carved in the 20th century. Two slender horns curve up from the crown, flanked by pointed ears. Small cutouts form the eyes above a long, squared muzzle that projects forward. The snout is often associated with the leopard or crocodile.

The dark surface is worn and chipped in places, showing lighter wood and faint traces of red. Two feet tall on its stand. A strong profile, best seen from the side.
